This is a simplified (and lighter) version of the traditional Gratin Dauphinois recipe, but it is equally delicious and makes a wonderful side dish for many occasions.

Step by Step Recipe Instruction Video:

 Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds (900g) of potatoes (preferably Yukon Gold or Russet)
  • 2 cups (480ml) whipping or heavy cream
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (100g) grated Gruyère or Emmental cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Nutmeg (optional)

 Steps to make it:

Instructions:

Prepare the Potatoes:

  • Wash and Peel the potatoes. Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, cut them into thin round slices, about 1/8 inch (3mm) thick.

Layer the Potatoes:

  • Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  • Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the baking dish, slightly overlapping each other.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over the potatoes.
  • Pour a small amount of the cream mixture over the potatoes, ensuring they are lightly coated.

  • Repeat this process until you have used all of the potatoes, about 3 to 5 layers.
  • Sprinkle some minced garlic and nutmeg between every other layer.

Bake the Gratin:

I like to cover the dish at first to allow for the potatoes to cook evenly without drying. You may want to use a baking sheet under the dish as the cream may boil over and spill inside the oven.

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven.
  • Bake for one hour.

Then remove the foil and layer the grated cheese on top of the dish.

Place back in the oven and continue baking for an additional 20-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve:

Once cooked, remove the gratin from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.

Serve the Gratin Dauphinois as a side dish alongside your favorite main course.

Enjoy the creamy and cheesy goodness of this comforting Gratin Dauphinois. It pairs well with roasted meats, and poultry, or as a vegetarian option with a side of green salad. Share your delightful creation with friends and family, and savor the flavors of this traditional French dish.
