When it comes to Chinese recipes my sister is the person that you want to sweet talk her into cooking for you, LoL. She lived in China for a few years and learned how to make some really delicious dishes just by watching street vendors and restaurant chefs.

This dish is heavy on the garlic and she adds the second half of the minced garlic towards the end of the cooking so that the dish tastes more garlicky and that's how we like it. If you don't like too much garlic you can cut down on the garlic quantities. You can use a wok or regular frying pan but if you do use a wok make sure it is very hot before you put the oil in and start cooking. If you are new to using wok please make sure you do your research on how to use it.

Lastly, you must prep everything cut and ready to go because once the wok is hot you want to move quickly.

You can serve this dish as a side dish or just enjoy it with steamed rice or noodles.

 Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lbs (700g) of Chinese Broccoli
  • 1 container/14 oz (400g) of firm or medium tofu
  • 5 to 10 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5 spices seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

 Steps to make it:

  1. Wash Chinese broccoli and cut into 2" pieces.
  2. Cut tofu into 1" (2.5cm) squares.
  3. Mince garlic
  4. Heat wok until it is making a little smoke.
  5. Add oil to the wok and heat it for a couple of seconds.
  6. Add half of the minced garlic into the wok and stir it around for about 10 to 15 seconds.
  7. Add tofu and mix. Cook it on each side for about 2 - 3 minutes.
  8. Add salt, and pepper, and mix.
  9. Add broccoli and cook for a few minutes while mixing until all the greens turn bright green and somewhat wilted but still crunchy.
  10. Add soy sauce and sesame oil and give it a good mix.
  11. Turn off the stove and plate the dish.

Pairs well with grilled fish, any meat dish, any stir-fried vegetables, rice, and noodles. This time, I made it with Grilled Mackerel.
