Ingredients:
- 700gr (1.5 lb) of pork shoulder (with bone)
- 2 onions
- Ginger
- 3 cloves of Garlic
- 4 or 5 pods of Star Anise
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
- 120ml (1/2 cup) of soy sauce
- Black pepper
- 3 to 5 bay leaves

Steps to make Anise Pork Roast:
A large Dutch oven works best for this recipe but you can use a regular pot or skillet.
Sear the Pork:
- Chop up the pork in big pieces.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
- Sear the pork on all sides until it's nicely browned, about 4-5 minutes per side.
Braise the Pork:
- In the same skillet or Dutch oven, add the remaining marinade along with the chicken broth. Bring it to a simmer.
- Pour in water into it until it covers the meat.
- Add in the chopped onions, the sliced ginger, and the crushed garlic.
- Add the soy sauce, brown sugar, bay leaves, black pepper, and the Star Anise pods.
- Boil first covered, then remove the cover and simmer for about an hour on low.
