Steps to make Anise Pork Roast:

A large Dutch oven works best for this recipe but you can use a regular pot or skillet.

Sear the Pork:

  • Chop up the pork in big pieces.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  • Sear the pork on all sides until it's nicely browned, about 4-5 minutes per side.

  • Pour in water into it until it covers the meat.
  • Add in the chopped onions, the sliced ginger, and the crushed garlic.
  • Add the soy sauce, brown sugar, bay leaves, black pepper, and the Star Anise pods.
  • Boil first covered, then remove the cover and simmer for about an hour on low.

Pairings:

  1. Steamed Jasmine Rice: Serve your Asian Pork Roast with a fluffy bed of steamed jasmine rice. The mild, fragrant rice complements the bold flavors of the dish, soaking up the delicious sauce.
  2. Stir-Fried Vegetables: A side of stir-fried vegetables such as bok choy, snap peas, or broccoli adds a fresh, crunchy contrast to the richness of the pork. Toss them in a light soy-ginger sauce for an extra Asian flair.
  3. Noodles: Opt for Asian-style noodles like lo mein or udon to create a hearty noodle bowl alongside the pork. Drizzle with a bit of the sauce for a delectable noodle dish.
  4. Pickled Vegetables: Pickled cucumber, daikon radish, or kimchi provide a tangy and refreshing accompaniment that balances the richness of the pork.
  5. Asian Slaw: Create a vibrant Asian slaw with shredded cabbage, carrots, and a sesame ginger dressing. This side dish adds a satisfying crunch and a burst of fresh flavors.
  6. Miso Soup: Start your meal with a bowl of comforting miso soup. Its umami-rich broth and earthy flavors make it an ideal appetizer to complement the pork.
  7. Asian-Inspired Cocktails: Pair your Asian Pork Roast with refreshing cocktails like a ginger lychee martini, sake sangria, or a classic Mai Tai to enhance the overall Asian dining experience.
  8. Fresh Fruit: Finish your meal with a light and fruity dessert like sliced mango, lychees, or a tropical fruit salad to cleanse your palate.
