Cooking with Goat Cheese: A Flavorful and Nutritious Choice
Goat cheese offers a range of benefits, both culinary and nutritional, making it a versatile and healthy addition to various dishes. From its rich flavor to its nutritional value, here’s why goat cheese is an excellent choice for your cooking:
Rich in Nutrients
Goat cheese is lower in fat and calories compared to many cow’s milk cheeses, making it a lighter option for those watching their intake. It’s also packed with vitamins like A and B2, along with essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are crucial for bone health.
Easier to Digest
Containing less lactose and smaller fat molecules than cow’s milk cheese, goat cheese is easier to digest, especially for people with mild lactose intolerance. Its unique protein structure is also less likely to cause digestive discomfort, offering a gentler alternative for sensitive stomachs.
Supports Gut Health
Fresh and fermented varieties of goat cheese often contain probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that promote gut health and aid in digestion. Incorporating probiotic-rich goat cheese into your diet can support a healthy digestive system.
Supports Weight Management
Goat cheese is rich in protein, helping to keep you full and satisfied, which can aid in weight management. Its creamy texture and strong flavor also mean you can use less of it while still enjoying a rich and indulgent taste, adding satisfaction without overindulgence.
Heart Health Benefits
Goat cheese contains medium-chain fatty acids like capric acid, which are more easily metabolized by the body and may support heart health by lowering cholesterol levels. These healthy fats provide a source of energy while benefiting overall cardiovascular well-being.
Culinary Versatility
Goat cheese is known for its ability to melt and spread smoothly, making it a perfect ingredient for various dishes like bakes, pastas, pizzas, and appetizers. Available in different forms—from soft and creamy to firm and crumbly—goat cheese can complement both sweet and savory recipes. It pairs exceptionally well with fruits, nuts, honey, vegetables, and meats, creating a delightful range of flavor combinations.
Unique Flavor Profile
With its distinct tangy flavor, goat cheese adds depth and sophistication to any dish, whether it’s used in a salad, casserole, or dessert. The variety of textures and flavors—ranging from mild and fresh to aged and sharp—makes it an ideal ingredient for elevating everyday meals.
Suits Special Diets
Goat cheese fits well with many specialized diets, including keto, paleo, and gluten-free plans. Its lower carbohydrate content and nutrient-rich profile make it a go-to ingredient for health-conscious eaters.
Incorporating goat cheese into your cooking not only elevates the flavor of your dishes but also provides valuable nutritional benefits. Its versatility, ease of digestion, and health benefits make it an excellent choice for both everyday meals and special occasions.
Step by Step Recipe Instruction Video:
Ingredients:
- 2 x 300g (10.5 oz) goat cheese
- 6 large eggs
- 1/4 cup fried shallots
- 1 tablespoon pesto
- 1/4 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- Wax paper for baking
- Baking pan (9 inch I used round cake pan)
Steps to make it:
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray or dish with wax paper. - Prepare the Goat Cheese Mixture
In a mixing bowl, combine the two 300g (10.5 oz) of goat cheese, 6 egg yolks, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy, ensuring the yolks are fully incorporated. - Whip the Egg Whites
In a separate, clean bowl, whisk the 6 egg whites until they form stiff peaks. This step is crucial for giving the bake its light, fluffy texture. - Fold in the Egg Whites
Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the goat cheese mixture using a spatula. Be careful not to overmix, as you want to retain as much air in the whites as possible to keep the bake light. - Transfer to the Baking Tray
Pour the mixture onto the wax paper-lined baking tray, spreading it evenly. - Add the Toppings
Add small dollops of pesto across the surface. Sprinkle the chopped sun-dried tomatoes and fried shallots on top of the cheese mixture. - Bake
Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 35 -45 minutes depending on your oven type and pan size, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set but still soft to the touch. - Serve
Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the goat cheese bake to cool for a few minutes before serving. Cut into slices and enjoy with a side of crusty bread or a fresh salad.
Notes:
- You can add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary to the cheese mixture for added flavor.
- If you prefer a sharper flavor, use a more aged goat cheese.

Pairing Ideas:
- Wine: A crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a light rosé would complement the tangy goat cheese and pesto flavors beautifully.
- Bread: Serve with warm, crusty French baguette slices or artisan sourdough bread for dipping.
- Salad: Pair with a fresh green salad featuring arugula, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a simple lemon vinaigrette to balance the richness of the bake.
- Soup: A light vegetable soup, like a classic gazpacho or creamy tomato basil, works well as a starter alongside the cheese bake.
